Default Motorcycle tank seat tail monocoque

I started this project some time ago. A separation and house move means it has got dusted off and restarted.
The buck does not have the tank shape. seem to have skipped photographing that bit. Tank is 1.6mm (16 ga.) 50523.2.jpg

I started with the tailpiece after annealing

The tank top was a single piece relatively straightforward stretch and ewheel to tidy up
The tank sides took some bag work after the overall main shape was established and matched to the top section31.jpg34.jpg

Here I am experimenting with a Monza fuel cap and tail light housing to funk it up a bit. Deciding whether i go more streamlined or leave these details ??40.jpg

I'm liking it Rick, especially the knee section of the tank.

Starting to make the seat base now, same 5052, but 3mm this time for additional strength and stability. I do not have benders so use a flat anvil in my e-wheel to start tipping the edge. To close to 90 degrees I fashioned a lever out of timber as you cannot tip the edge that far on the e-wheel. Brute force combined with lashings of ignorance got the result I was after. Flared the ends to blend into tank and tail piece43.jpg

The motorcycle frame on the bench is a Ducati Multistrada (2004). I have cut the tail section off and will weld a new reshaped cr-mo rear section on. I marvel at what you can 'get away with' in the USA. Would love to have a crack at some front forks ala 'Sandman style', but the compliance hurdles through the licensing bodies here in New Zealand would literally drain the life from you and take any enjoyment away. I will still have a lot of 'fun' in getting my modifications certified before licensing.

Welded the shell with TIG. Have oxy acetylene welded alu before but keep going back to TIG. I find it to be more forgiving and controllable when there are slight gaps between the butted sheets, I appreciate the OA weld is stronger, less HAZ and anneals the material........... Long story short, I need more practice!65.jpg69.jpg

Thanks for your kind comments.
Richard, aka skintkarter, I still plan to come and look at your shop when I am dragged to Auckland against my will.

Now onto taking the bottom flange of the seat over. I employed very hi tech and expensive folding gear to achieve a precision result

Fabbed up the back end of the frame. Sold a kidney to manage to afford some cr-mo tubing for the rear section. Given it is only supporting my butt, I could have got away with MS, but wanted to be in keeping with the rest of the frame

Welding carbon steel with a TIG is sooo relaxing compared to Aluminium.IMG_5079.jpgIMG_5088.jpgIMG_5091.jpgIMG_5109.jpg

Be great to meet you Rick, but we have just sold the shed! Been pestered by a Real Estate Agent for the last 2 years who reckoned he had 2 x Indian families who wanted to fight each other over it. Basically the only undeveloped section in a cul de sac of $3.0m + homes. Spin was that they wanted to build a big 'look at me' house right up on the road frontage, so the shed was of no interest and would happily lease it back to us for 18 months whilst they got their plans together and we found somewhere else. Unfortunately on the day they were both AWOL and the guy who stepped up was an ex Sprint Car driver with a car collection. Who would have thought...? So out of here at the end of March. Upside of course is that I get to build a brand new shop, more or less the same design, but 4.0mtrs longer and 1.0mtrs wider (20x13), plus separate garaging for the cars and bikes to get them out of the workshop and make them more available for drives. Currently if we want one of the cars out, its a mission to wheel all the bikes out etc... First World problems I know. Idea hopefully is that we have timed the market, but the increased building costs may yet bite us in the bum. Some of the Real Estate photos are still up on the web here: https://raywhite.co.nz/auckland/manu...ston/MKU34544/
