Default Hand Planishing

Rough, lumpy and bashed.
Brass, old, varying thickness .040" to .055" - 1.mm to 1.4mm
Hand tools are few, simple : small hammer, deep reach hammer, track dolly, Marlin spike - 12in.
Good lighting.
Comfortable working position.

Sometimes you never know what is under the lumps and bashes, nicks and gouges ... and patina:

P1130078 French, hammered courses, factory marks.jpg
1800's French "bowl mfg" hammered in "courses" - linear strikes circumferential, heavier at outer edge and going lighter to center.
Cool Workmanship to find when restoring old metal components.

And then again, sometimes I can use a sensitively adjustable machine to do the delicate work ...

(This customer is extremely particular about his collection. "NO MARKS CAN BE ADDED!)

Man, I love those old tool marks. Great work servicing the helmets without disturbing the patina.

The only old tool marks I've studied on a deep sea helmet are on this life sized full round portrait statue of Herman Wolter in Fernwood Cemetery in Lansdowne, PA...

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.

I would love to get your 3500 machine with all the goodies. The last place I worked at had one and I miss using it. Some day.....
