I have used plasma for that method.
The welding cleans up the rough edges. Even though I run the torch along a polished hard guide for smooth cuts.

I used it on .050 3003, long seams. Clecoed, lapped tight.
Must use new consumables. Plunge cuts backfire onto the tender consumables ... clean cuts only come from fresh consumables. that is all -
