New hose hooked up. No leaks. Only way I can get gas to flow is to hold down what I thought was cutting lever.

"Idle" should be separate valve, then lever is big boost.
Idle is set, O/A, neutral flame.
I have welded thin sheet with cutting torch, at idle.... no boost....using O/A ...
and also O/H.
You only need to heat metal - not welding. Small flame at idle.... plenty to heat the short stripe you are needing.

Probably zero photos of the torch you are now using?

Smith Airline lite-o-matic

Owner says only way he can get it to work is holding lever down. Let up and it shuts off.

Okay then, practice the hand maneuvers needed to operate that Smith.
Get sorta fluent with it, on-off-on-hot-hotter-off.
No sense in over heating that tender spot, unnecessarily.

Finally making progress. Rig had no flame arrestors so got a pair today. Could not get acetelene to flow beyond a dribble. Took valve off torch and blew compressed air into inlet as blockage was between there and valve. Got it flowing good and was finally able to light torch and get desired flame. Welded cheap comma dolly on top of slapper to press up underneath. 4 seconds of heat along ridge and bulge came down(shrank?). Made metal template and fits much much better. Small ridge just below one removed. Thats next.

Good progress on your metal - and on the old torch!

Made a longer template to check overall conture. Pretty good fit. One last small ridge circled in red. Kent why a covex dolly on a concave surface when heat shrinking? Seems concave would help it match contour.
