Testing Tinman Tech’s Aluminium Flux
Hey guys. I thought I’d give an unbiased report of using Kent White’s Super Premium Aluminium flux for the first time. Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated to Kent, nor sell his products.
To business… I’m mightily impressed. The flux works as well as I can remember the old school BOC stuff used to. The weld, and in particular, the penetration side is super clean. This is 22 gauge (0.8mm) that I’m welding for a vintage Tiger Moth. This is fused only, with no tacks and zero rod fill. Here’s a test piece: Penetration side: post pics This is the weld side: |

Man you made that look easy!
What type of gases are you using?

Hey Larry. I'm using 1950's vintage BOC glasses with cobalt blue lenses. Thanks

If you like the flux, you'll really like his welding goggles.
I have two pair - to allow an observer a "really good look" !!

Very impressive Matt. I will have to give his flux a go. I highly recommend Kent's googles and the Meco midget torch. But you seem to be doing fine.

Thanks David. I'm quite fond of my torch, but I wouldn't mind trying his goggles. They are quite expensive, though. Especially shipped to the UK!

Holy cow, I've never seen that done without tacking first. Did not realize that was even possible -- cannot imagine the amount of practice required. Very impressive!

Stretch,
My (original) thoughts exactly! I had a set of cobalt lenses. Tried the Tinman's googles and the resistance due to expense evaporated in less than a blink. Later attended one of his workshops. After hours of practice, eyes felt totally normal! Not so with the cobalt lenses.(Which I tossed as I wouldn't pass them on to any but a real enemy).

Matt,
Your welds look very nice. Well done! Very appropriate for a Tiger Moth. You have a steady hand, good torch angle and flame setting, and solid experience at this. And both your material and flux-mix water were clean. (ps, I used the old cobalts in 1976. Once. Still have them in their AO box. By 1982 I had worked up a proto green lens that I have now used exclusively since, for gas welding. I still have 20/20 vision, no eye surgery, no glasses except for reading.) Thank you very much for the positive comment. Success and Joy!
