Question Advice for buying o/a setup in Australia

Hi all,ive been looking to get a o/a setup recently to learn how to torch weld and to do some shrinking.
Ive found a kit i think would suit but just wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations of what to buy in Australia.
This is a link to the kit ive been looking at

https://www.boc.com.au/shop/en/au/we...light-duty-kit

Any advice would be appreciated as i dont want buy something not suited.
I spoke to a guy from a boc distributor ,he said with the kit, regulators and bottles it will be about $850 and that there are other welding tip sizes available.
To begin with i will be mostly only be working
with steel.
Cheers johnny

Johnny, that is not a bad start, IMO.

BOC is effectively the same company as Afrox here in South Africa and also part of the Linde group of companies. I own Afrox equipment and the quality is excellent. No doubt, other members here in Australia will have first hand experience here.

Not certain about the nozzle sizes, but if you need one between two supplied sizes, you can easily get it ordered. You'll still need regulators and obviously cylinders. 2-stage regulators would be my preferred choice. Check the local classifieds for a quality brand - Harris etc.. As far as cylinders go, ask around about the cylinder owners' policies regarding rental costs, returns etc. Here in SA we have 3 suppliers and they all have moved over to a monthly rental policy, but owners of older contracts who have paid upfront deposits (as have I) can keep using the cylinders and refilling them without monthly rentals. Also our local suppliers range from militant to friendly and one supplier in particular will confiscate cylinders returned for filling without proof of a hire contract!

Not sure how the suppliers work in Aus, but do your research carefully as this can prove a costly exercise if you don't know how the system works.

Thanks for the advice Manny,
I will make sure i get two stage regulators.
With the bottles here its a yearly fee from what i understand ,but i will double check that after what you've explained .
Cheers johnny

Default O/A welding torch

I recommend the Mecco torch from Tin Man Tech. I use the #1 tip for welding 18 to 20 gage and the #2 and #3 for light heating or heavy shrinking. Get the light weight hoses and adapters. This set up really helped my weld quality and speed as well as reduced burn through holes.

Being you are in OZ, Peter Tommasini would be the one to tell you what is available in Australia, and what would be best. He sells a gas welding kit on his site as well.
You can contact him through his site or phone.

Hi Johnny. Before you get into spending a lot of money on a set up.
Why don’t you do an evening class at a tafe collage. I did a welding course here in Melbourne. And it was great.
Also have a look at eBay. Bunnings, total tools.ect. They also sell gas bottles.
For welding equipment. I think they maybe cheaper then BOC.

Thanks for the replies.
Ive read a lot of good stuff about the mecco torches ,
But i d really prefer to buy a product readilly available in australia.mostly just for convenience of getting spare parts and fittings etc.
Ive looked into night classes and found some for mig and tig which sound great. But seems to be nothing on o/a welding that i can find.
Ive seen the total tools kits advertised and definitely not opposed to saving a buck.is there a kit in particular you d recommend?

Asking Peter Tomassini is a good idea aswell.
Watching his dvd s is a big part of what is motivating me to try and learn this skill.

That boc gas bottle deal is the one i was quoted it seems a pretty fair deal.
Cheers johnny

I don't think you'll experience any significant wear to the Meeco unless you get in a hurry and use it for a hammer or something.
