Correct name for an auto body panel ?

What is the correct name for the panel between the back window (back-light) and the trunk lid (deck lid) ? Years ago I saw it listed in a hot rod magazine as a “Tulip panel” but with over 50 years in the collision business I’ve never heard any body man refer to it by that name probably because now a days the deck lid ends at the back window with no panel between. I recently saw a video where Voodoo Larry was referring to it as a “cat walk panel” and that just got me wondering again, what really is the correct name for that panel ~ John Buchtenkirch

Yup. I know it as a tulip panel, as well, which I learned in the '60s. Reproduction company Goodmark Industries calls it a deck filler panel, along with (tulip panel) in the ad.

I have always referred to it as the rear cowl. That was the accepted terminology when I was writing insurance estimates. At least no one said otherwise. In the UK it might be called the rear scuttle.

I have only known that part to be called a "decker panel" , a scuttle in my understanding is the vertical bulkhead dividing one area from another. Does USA automotive terminology include the "parcel shelf" or is that european nomenclature?

It's known as "neck-breaking projectile" in the days before headrests, if in an accident. All kidding aside, we call it the "package shelf", here.

In the USA the package tray or package shelf is the horizontal panel in front of the rear window, not behind it. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Same here in Australia but called a parcel shelf.
The panel outside between the window and the boot lid is the rear lower window panel.

I've seen it referred to as a "Dutchman Panel", but only when talking about musclecar era Mopars, for some reason...

Called a friend who runs a family owned body shop .


He checked his book and it returned with:


Panel, upper - "above the lid" (trunk lid)


Guess it depends on where you are and who you talk to!

That panel is a “turtle filler”, per my old friend Dob. I’ve always called it a trunk filler though.
