For the rust.. Well looks like you took the same strategy as I.. Buying a totally rusted out car as a great exercice to learn the metalshaping art ! Go for it, I am loving it!
For your U-shape: I am no expert, especially seeing the level here, but I would do it in two parts butt welded, just as Kent said!

Keep us updated !

@Antoine_P - I am still going through your Ghia Journey, what a fantastic build.

I believe you need something like this?
This pne is for Spider but I assume it's the same. Customer brought it to make a copy for another project.

Good morning, and yes that is the panel. I have that piece on order from ClassicAlfa in the UK.

My big challenge is going to be fabricating the supporting classic rails and the rear valance of the car. On my series 750 the trunk panel actually extends through the rear of the car to where the bumper fits.

Thanks for the note!

I am working on some minor exterior patching right now, but will start some practice fabrication of those channels and post how that goes. I expect the first 20+ attempts will be pretty sad. Grin.

Made a test section from easy to work with aluminum sheet and I think I may have an approach. The actual main channel on the car is a bit simpler that I thought although there will be some compound curves where it meets the firewall.

Going to try to make a larger section like this out of 18 gauge this weekend.
