A GREAT book!

I spent the afternoon looking for something and while looking I ran across some books I had purchased from Ron Nadia several years ago. I had glanced at them at the time but one thing or another and I never read them. One title intrigued me and I read the whole thing this evening in one setting. It is a SUPER book!

Unfortunately it's no longer in print. The book is "How to CONTROL Auto Body Sheet Metal" by Melvin T. Richert ISBN 0-8019-5310-3. It was published in hardcover by Chilton in 1968. This book was written as a SUPPLEMENT to traditional auto body trade school textbooks and while it is primarily collision repair oriented, it focuses on the WHY and explains in very simple terms what is happening inside the metal when it is damaged and repaired. It has lots of clear language and good illustrations and is able to break down what can be the tedious subject of what is happening at the metallurgical structure into understandable language. Some of the discussions of internal metallic LOCKS from damage and plastic flows are just great!

From the introduction:

The man who has learned the auto body trade will always have a job and the man who knows the "why" of it will be his superior. Knowing "why" can make the difference between being a mere worker or being a master craftsman.

Many of us have read and own "The Key to Metal Bumping", another great book that describes HOW to use body tools to move metal. This book explains WHY.

I found it very interesting that a lot of the illustrations I use in the 101 seminar are basically the same as described in the book and I found some new descriptions that I can incorporate into future classes.

Yep, I was putting it back in place and opened it up. I'm glad you were able to get it Brent. Let me know what you think.

Chilton is defunct and has been passed around to a bunch of companies but I think I know who owns the rights to their catalog and have sent them an email. I'd love to have permission to scan and post some of the content.

My copy of "How to Control Autobody Sheet Metal" arrived today.

It is approx 100 pages published in 1968. 50 plus pages of text and an equal number of simple but clear illustrations to clarify the text.

The material is all about metallurgy, put into a fairly understandable format. The author is able to connect the theory to everyday repair examples. For a reader not familiar with metallurgy or not particularly interested in the scientific study: this book gives just enough information for an understanding of how and why metallurgy is important without wading through the boring details.

An easy read and good learning tool.
Highly recommended
