Default How do I make a rolled edge for karmann Ghia wing / fender ?

Hello all from rainy Scotland. Beginner (ish). I have a karmann ghia and am making front wing with templates / english wheel etc. Going ok, but struggling to make the lip at the outer edge which goes around approx 3/4of circle and gives panel lots of edge strength.
I have a bead roller, but one sharp edged tipping wheel with nylon roller at bottom gives too sharp an edge. A tank roller would give me 45 degrees, but I need 270. I realise I will need to do this in more than one operation. Thinking maybe tank roll to 45 degrees then hammer dolly round the rest..

I have looked at loads of u tube videos but they seem to only do a 90 degree edge or a wire rolled edge...

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, jeff

Hi Jeff,

I too am a beginner, I think what your describing is a wire bead edge if that helps in your search for ideas. There are different dies for the bead roller to do this operation, but that is as much as I know and can help with. I'm sure others with a lot more experience will comment soon.

Good luck. And pictures are always appreciated by us all.

Default rolled edge problem !

Mr Fixit, many thanks for your reply - a wire rolled edge is too small, the karmann has a rolled edge of diameter maybe 15 to 20 mm. Most frustrating, but thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me. I will maybe ask again.

thanks, jeff

I haven't tried it (have Pullmax !) but, after an initial 90, what's stopping you from duplicating the hand formed wired edge, only larger?

Weld a handle on a relatively short piece of 20mm bar and use it to work it over to your target of 270 degrees?

Yes, you need a "hollow rolled edge."
Like 1934,5,6,7 Buick, Caddy, etc GM stuff - and other autos like your Karmann.

You need to make/find a solid steel round of the diameter that fits inside a good section of what you have, and weld a handle on it TANGENTIAL to the round, so you can get the 270 ... right? - and use it to tap the straight sections.

Then curve a piece to the arch, whatever length you can hold in one paw whilst whanging on with your other.

ps. heat helps, go dull red and tap quick to stretch inside the arch.
pps. for the outside curve -if you have that problem - go to dull red and GATHER /SHRINK the metal.
(think of fanning playing cards out for stretching - and gathering up the cards for shrinking. ... - okay?)

Giving credit where it is due . . . truth be told . . .

I believe my suggestion arose out of the knowledge gained from attending Kent's Workshops. Kinda WWKD, (without suggesting any form of deification!).

I've posted before, lauding the benefit of his workshops. Besides the course of instruction, an additional benefit can be gained from wandering around (both inside and outside) musing on the purpose of all the "stuff" - it really increases one's knowledge base.

Like having access to the "back end" or workshop of a museum IYKWIM
