Default Pattern problem

I have an issue with pattern making. I take a cylinder or cone and wrap a piece of tape around the outer diameter of the cylinder or cone. I then pull the tape and transfer the length of the tape to a flat piece of metal. After rolling the flat piece the od of the piece is a small amount larger than the original
I work with 16,18 and 20 guage. I'm sure I'm missing something with bend allowance or something along those lines. I make certain the tape isn't stretching. Any input appreciated....Steve

If the tape shifts from O.D. on pattern to I.D. on part then the circumference / metal thickness adds to your total - "by a small amount" .
