Default attempting patch panel

20220813_162639.jpg
I am attempting to make this panel.
On my first shot i tried to make it in one piece
I did the reverse first but then found i couldnt get the crown into the rest of the panel,(i think the reverse added a lot of strength which made it difficult)
20220813_162859.jpg
after this l thought i probably should have put crown into the panel first then add the reverse,i also decided to try make it in two pieces.
First the bigger piece with the slight crown in it,
I got the shape in by flipping the panel over onto a flat dolly and tapping in a grid pattern with low crown hammer.then tipped the edge.it lost a bit of shape after tipping.i shrunk along the flange and it helped bring it back20220813_162739.jpg

Next i tried to make the bit with the reverse and folds for wheel arch.
On the first attempt it was goin okay at first but i had a problem again with the reverse stopping me from gettin the curve around the wheel arch.
I started again this time i got the curve first then tipped the fold line slightly and tried to add the reverse,in doing so i lost the curve of the wheel arch again.
I kept going back and forth between them, but without much success.

Just wondered if anyone might have some advice on this ?

Johnny. Check out these two threads.
In the first one, I first made a 90 degree bend. Then I made the shape in the machine. You can use a rubber wheel or a hockey puck or whatever to make the shape. Only you must not hamer hit the hard surface. You have to go soft. The sheet must still be soft. A hard, beaten sheet is unusable.
Maybe shape on a larger piece of sheet metal. It won't twist as much. After shaping, you cut.

In this case, the hockey puck in the machine helped a lot.

Default Thankyou jaroslav

Thanks for the advice jaroslav.
I read both your threads, you do great work.
I will try again leaving more material on both sides and also not hitting the metal as hard.
I will post results.
Also which order would you recommend putting the shape in?

Johnny

I would make the first move.

Second step. You can extrude the shape with wood and a mallet in a vise If someone moves the sheet metal for you. I don't know what equipment you have.
If the shape needs to be bent according to the curve of the body, do it (with the jaws) before starting the second shape.

Johnny, if you don't have access to much gear, try to research some of the Peter Tommasini stuff. Peter is your local wizard in terms of blocking shape into things. Whilst the temptation is to beat the hell out of the panel to form the reverse, my understanding is that this needs to be avoided. And always put more general shape into a panel before forming details, as the details always suck general shape from the panel. There is a great video of Peter forming an HK Monaro rear quarter from a single sheet. I still struggle with the notion of blocking shape 'the wrong way' into a panel before forming a return. Think about the fuel filler recess in the HK guard - Peter wheels the general shape in the panel and then blocks from the back side to create material, before sinking the reverse. The idea being that the reverse blocking creates material so that when the filler recess is subsequently blocked, that it doesn't suck shape from the main panel. A bit of a head frig, but 'Con the Fruiterer' is a master. I'm sticking some hat pins in a waxen effigy of him as I type.

Okay thankyou both skintcarter and jaroslav.
This is all great advice.
I will try get in the shed after work and family stuff tomorrow night and get restarted.
Ill also rewatch the tomassini videos and focus on the blocking from behind to create more material
What you said about that makes a lot of sense.
As for the tools i have at the moment are the basics
Hammer and dollies set
Random lumps of steel and wood
Stump with hollow
Sandbag
Big steel blocking hammer
And machines are shrinker stretcher and small bead roller.
Again cheers the advice is greatly appreciated
Johnny

I had a bit of time this arvo to work on the patch panel again.
I tipped the inner edge first then shrunk along the flanged edge to bring the shape of the body line round.
It seemed to work well .
Next ill try make the reverse or return (im not sure of the proper name of it)
