Thanks David , I hope you can get a good picture of the flame adjustment you use to weld brass. I was taught never to use an oxidizing flame on my torch ,but I never tried to weld brass. I am very intrested to see how this is done. Great thread, yes I'm reading it .

Welding brass is not straightforward. You need an oxidising flame to weld it. I show how to set up the torch on my youtube footage. I have always used pre-fluxed rods but this does not give a perfect colour match which does not matter for the shells I make because they are chrome finished. I have always been able to metal finish the parts which is more important. The flux has been changed recently and now I am experiencing cracking when dressing out the weld. I am using the last of the old rods on this shell. I am experimenting to see what else will work- but for now...

The parts are tacked together at regular intervals..

Then seem welded- The problem with welding brass is that bras is made up of copper and zinc the zinc melts at a lower temperature than the copper and leaves holes in the surface of the joint. This is called volatilization.

The welds I get are never very neat but they are going to be ground off anyway. The weld pool seems to have a life of its own. I try to have a fair bit of build so that any porosity is in the bead of the weld and will be ground off, this does not always work but it prevents too many pinholes.

Here is the inside of the weld.

I very carefully grind and sand both inside and outside of the weld to make it the same thickness as the original sheet. This is a very time consuming part of the build.

David
