Terminology question
I'm editing a technical document that includes this phrase:
The fan unit shall include a folded aluminum housing ...The fan housing is essentially a box made from sheet aluminum - see attached. I'm wondering if there isn't a better way to write that sentence. Something that sounds more technical/engineering. Fan housing.jpg Thanks

Quote:
"Fabricated" is a common term for sheet parts not otherwise drawn, pressed, or printed.

The fan unit shall include a folded aluminum housing .
I would change that sentence to read The fan unit shall include a 20 gage ( or what ever thickness would be appropriate) folded aluminum housing. That way it describes the process and material used to fabricate the housing. There's no confusion about the housing being cast or machined out of a block of aluminum.

Also... if one really needs to get technical, there are also literally hundreds of aluminium alloys - especially with regards to strength, hardness, resistance to corrosion, etc. So the grade and hardness of aluminium should also be specified like 5005 (alloy) H14(hardness)

Context? Puzzling to me why a nonspecific description like that would be included with a view like that. Notes on the drawing would be much more descriptive.
If it's an RFQ, maybe it stands as written? If it's a user manual, "The fan is enclosed by an aluminum housing" or "The fan housing is aluminum" or just skip it altogether . But seriously, I think context is everything here.
