Pancake a hood on a 46 Olds
This is my first try at pancaking a hood. The car is a 46 Olds model 76 that I have been converting into a 3 window coupe. I asked a few people at this year's RedNeck Roundup on techniques to accomplish the job. Maybe some of those people, and others, will be interested in the method I used.
DSCN5292.jpg This is the original hood, I will take 2 inches out of the profile measured at the front. The tape marks the location of the cut I made. I plotted the wedge cut each 4 inches over the 78 inch line to keep the cut consistent. DSCN5303.jpg This shows the method working one side at a time. The lower half was welded to the fender to keep it stable. The lower half was tuck shrunk inward to approach the upper half. The upper half was stretched in the wheel to meet the lower half. The measurements written on the metal are notes about the amount of shrink/stretch to make the upper and lower halves meet. DSCN5304.jpg [ATTACH]DSCN5305.jpg[/ATTACH] After cutting and welding both sides I needed to add 1/2 inch to the rear of the hood to make up for the forward shift of the upper parts. The last photo is the new profile. Not a huge change but I feel it takes the "high prow" look away from the hood. Note that there are no pie cuts. I feel this method saved a lot of welding and finish work that comes with pie cuts. All my welds are Oxy/Act, butt welded. This is a demonstration of the techniques I have been learning from Pat Brubaker (PatMan) during classes I have taken from him at Custom Rides in Hastings Nebraska.

Nice!
It looks to me like you mover the upper skin forward to match the shape, then filled in the rear. Am I correct, or did I miss something? Can't wait to see the rest of the car!
