Hi Nate,
Hmmmm ... sounds like you started tig welding 3003 with 4043 filler ...
Right?
Hard and brittle welds, right? Hard to file and hard to bend without cracking?
Dark weld lines/seams?

Yep. You got 4043 filler - which is GREAT for welding aluminum castings.
Otherwise, for welding 3003 sheet (and 1100 sheet) you "always" use 1100 filler - or thin snippets off your sheet - or use fusion welding (autogenous welding, Scot welding, etc).

Keep right on re-welding. You are in a big club, now.

While I think alcohol is safer than acetone either is safe for welding imo. Brake cleaner can turn to phosgene gas and I would never use it before welding.

Dont think acetone is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. If I find out acetone can create gas I will stand corrected and stop using.

Yep, yep, and yep! 4043 is exactly what I was using. Now that I know a little more its hard to ignore the difference. Cracks aside as you mentioned filing and even planishing is difficult. I learned my lesson!

Acetone contains only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen; no halogens are present. Once it flashes off, you're good to go for welding.

Hi Greg,
I checked on acetone having chlorine - Nope. Safe for weld prep.

"Some of the commonly known chlorinated solvents include:
  • Dichloromethane (DCM)
  • Vinyl chloride (VC)
  • Dichloroethene (DCE)
  • Tetrachloroethene (PCE)
  • 1, 1, 1 – Trichloroethane (TCA)
  • Trichloroethene (TCE)
  • TetrachloromethaneCT)
  • Trichloroethylene (TCE)"
https://www.mvorganizing.org/what-ar...inated_solvent

Funny thing that I read a few welding articles some years back that listed it - along with brake cleaner and TCE as being a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
Thanks for the clarify!

Once the wire edge was complete (and repaired) it was time to drill rivet holes for the bottom pieces. As much as I wanted the entire body to be one piece it just wasn't going to be possible with the chassis. I wasn't too sure about the rivets but I think they will give it a "period" look haha.

This is kind of an update dump so I apologize. I'm a little behind in my updates.

The car is FINISHED! Well at least for now. It may never truly be finished haha. Once the rivet holes were drilled I began the process of sanding and fine tuning highs and lows. Then I finished everything off with the maroon scotch pad and alcohol. I am really happy with the finish it left. Its plenty smooth enough that you can tell this was my first metal shaping project, but not mirror like so that even the tiniest imperfection has a neon sign lol.

More importantly my daughter loved it! Now all I hear is "I wanna go fast in my race car!". And she usually wants to put on my outdated open-face helmet to do it .

So cool! So cute! With that helmet on, I'm reminded of Danica Patrick!
