62 Vespa VBB project
I’m sure questions will come up. This scooter is pretty dented especially in the legshield area. I am still not able to do metal finishing to the point of not using filler, though I always try. When I fall short, I don’t sweat it because I always learn and improve.
So far, it’s going well. Most of my previous attempts have been in a VW bus. The Vespa had been much easier. Old meat and potatoes metal, lovely curves with lots of memory. It’s made me feel like I actually have some skill. So far no heat shrinking. Much nicer than the vast low crown panels on a bus. Thanks for having a look. 10429340-3FE6-456E-B702-DCB6EBAEF8E4.jpg 5D57A6E1-3F7E-4BF7-B9A1-74489DB26F04.jpg 2FDF0AD7-8431-4601-9E51-E901A5E22F9B.jpg

That looks like a wonderful project. I've had a few Vespas and loved each one!

Thank you. I had one in my late teens in the late 80’s. They are lovely simple machines. A nice break from restoring a VW bus. Stuff that took me months on the bus got done in a couple afternoons on the scooter.

Very cool. I'm like you and enjoy working on bike-sized projects much more than 4 wheelers. That's one reason our 71 camper went away a few years ago.

Once in awhile I get to work on this. Part of the frame tunnel was tweaked in an accident. I had removed the piece so I could straighten the thinner attached legshield. Also working out a dent on the horn casting. I will take a contour of the good side of the legshield to get the get the dented side the right shape. Side cowls are also roughed out.
This metal behaves much better than on my VW bus and makes me feel like I know what I’m doing. But it’s more that low crown panels are so much harder. I have just been dinging out the low spots and going over it with a Martin spoon to smooth it out. Surprisingly, there is no real rust in this. At some point some joker made an “access panel” in it with a can opener presumably to pull wires and cables. I cut the rest of it out to treat the inside of the frame tunnel and because the access flap was a mess. There is only surface rust inside. The underside is almost perfect. The brown color in the wheel well is actually factory primer. No rust. The factory seam sealer is also intact. I plan on painting it the original color. I’m not really a patina guy, though I would touch up and keep original paint if it was in decent condition. The bad respray and amount of metal finishing on it mean it will be a complete respray.
Thanks for reading along. C7D2FD55-0682-4E22-8F38-DCEFCAE3F33A.jpg BAA367D0-D2B3-46A0-A6D9-59190F9C9927.jpg

My bus has gone for long periods off the road. It’s easy to bite off more than I can chew and it gets stuck in a non driveable state. This makes many people panic and want to sell or farm it out to get done fast. I just leave it until I can back to it. It’s not going anywhere. When I get back to it, I often do better work and it goes faster.

Nice Job James, It does look in good condition, well worth the effort.

That does look good and solid. I've got several rusty ones. I've heard of the "access panels" but never seen one.
Nice work, fun project. I enjoy my 67 Sprint quite a bit.
