Help understanding whats needed tank corner
So I decided to play around a little this afternoon with making practice small corner panel for the tank on my bike project. Seems like a pretty simple panel and I actually got pretty close to getting it to fit. This was just a practice piece but I was hoping to get some input in order to further my understanding. It seems like the only main forming needed is shrinking of the corner and maybe a little stretching once I tip the flange around the back. At one point I beat on it on the bag which I dont think accomplished much. However I am going for a slight curvature to the side of the tank so the side profile should curve out slightly from the bottom flange until it blends through the upper corner into the top of the tank which is also slightly curved. So is this panel just a matter of shrinking or does it require some blocking to?

Hi Matt
I'm no expert but I will try help you out. I think your spot on, shrink that top corner alot more where you have shrink written. Planish your walnuts out on the flatter surface's. Where you have stretch on the bottom flange is correct too.

Matt. Make the shape you need from paper. Part or all. You then straighten and cut the paper. You can also cut for straightening. You will very well see where and how it is necessary to shape. Calmly paper from a snack glued with tape.

Jaro is exactly correct in what you need to do.
Make a paper pattern. if the panel needs stretch you will need to slice or slit the paper to get in to lay the way you want. If the panel needs shrinking you will need to put tucks in the paper to get it to lay the way you want. Then you can take the paper pattern lay it out flat on your sheet of metal and it will tell you the size and shape you need to cut the blank. You can also make profile gauges to check your shaping progress with. Go to youtube and look up Peter tommasini find his videos on the beginner class, the videos on reading paper patterns, and the first video on making a Healey fender or mud guard. Those videos will show you how to make and use paper patterns and also profile gauges. A paper pattern is an essential first step in making a panel. It gives you a roadmap on what to do.
