Wheeling questions
How smooth should I be able to make fender. I sanded with 600 so you can see what I am talking about, I could sand this out but I was curious if there are any tips to get it smoother I am using a rounded lower wheel with about 3/16 flat from hoosier. The next size up is 3.5 and does not fit in the radius. 16g aluminum Last edited by Troy Fab; 01-19-2016 at 09:23 PM. |

Open the fender up to reduce the shape then use a flatter lower anvil and light pressure to decrease the lines then push back on both sides to return the piece to it's desired "form".
Always "open up" your project to reduce the shape as much as possible when wheeling this will reduce the lines by allowing you to use the lowest crown anvil. When your finished wheeling then rearrange the objects form back to what your making to monitor the progress. Continue to open and close the shape and wheel as needed to "sneak" up on the desired shape and form your looking to attain. It also looks like you could better blend the transition areas (the lumps either side of the flat) on your anvils and it would go a long way towards not getting the lines to begin with.

Hi Steve
With a bit of practice and the right wheel and lower anvils , and by using little pressure you should be able to get a pretty good finish like this below very little sanding or filing is required Peter SAM_3629.jpg SAM_3630.jpg SAM_3631.jpg SAM_3668.jpg SAM_3669.jpg SAM_3623.jpg

Thanks Kirk and Peter for the replies.
Kirk do you mean open by hand and then close by hand, as in squeezing it? Should I be concerned about losing the radius or creating a kink when squeezing? This is 16g aluminum. Peter, That is the finish I thought I should be able to get. Thanks for pics. Last edited by Troy Fab; 01-20-2016 at 07:37 PM. |

Peter, That is the finish I thought I should be able to get. Thanks for pics Troy....... What kind of wheel and lower anvils are you using? How much pressure are you working with? Peter

By changing the arrangement of your part, or by opening it up as Kirk suggests, you can better fit your part to your wheel. You don't have to wheel it exactly as a finished part, sometimes you have to move things around to get a good wheeling action.

Tonight's work. smoother but lost my radius and ends flattened out. Switched to a 3.5 lower anvil.
