I bought a small box of abused eckold hf dies at an auction for about 20 euro's. They were sold as some sort of clamping parts. The handformer machine itself was also sold, for about 1500 euro's but without any dies. A couple years later my brother found something in a scrapyard that said 'Eckold'. He also found the floor-plate seperately in the aluminium bins. He didn't know exactly what it was but he knew Eckold makes expensive machines so he bought it for scap-price.
When he showed it to me I immediately recognised the handformer. He gave it to me since I'm the one doing sheetmetal and I already had the dies. Lucky lucky me. |

A bit of good news received this week about my machine. The company that manufactured this is actually still in existence and I had been put in contact with the person who owned it at the time. He told me where to look for a serial number which I found and sent to him. I didn’t hear anything for many weeks but I got an email from him the other day telling me that my machine was manufactured in 1959 for the Admiralty Dockyard in Portsmouth. It was one of around 10 machines, all slightly different, so it’s something of a rare beast.
He also sent me a period photo of the Type 340 machine that this is. Mine appears to have had quite a bit more stiffness built into the main casting than the one on this photo. It does make you wonder how many of the other machines still exist as there are no photos to be found on internet searches. 623A3AE6-FC70-43EF-81DA-415811B44AC7.jpg

Wow, that is so great that you got to find out some history about it.

I brought a similar animal. I replaced the engine and added a tool. I bent the precision stainless (1.5mm) steel rings beautifully. Very solid machine. I added a reversing switch. The machine works on both sides. Clutch control remained the same. It is very oversized. He has been guarding my workshop for several years since this contract. But a good guard. Once every 10 years, he is always ready and nothing will stop him.

Well, of course. Think how useful all those kids with political science, sociology and the various "studies" degrees are?
