Gday From Brendan In Australia.
Currently restoring a 1962 chrysler valiant.
Tools include a stump ,Davids DVD,home made mallets, Force brand hammer and dolly set(great set for the price)
Lincoln 180c mig,I beam ,various pieces of metal to bend and shape on,leaf spring slapper,etc
Starting to get reasonable results ,and only need a skim of bog over my repairs!
By the time I have finished the project I would like to have done a repair without any bog we`ll see!

Hi Bendan, Welcome to the site, sounds like you are getting good results. It takes practice no-one learns overmight but using the right techniques will give you a head start. It wouls be good to see some photos.

I bought the old girl 2 years ago.

the bloke I bougt it off said" the floors have been fixed" .Yeh ,fixed with sheetmetal over the rust with pop rivets!!
All four floor corners were similar

Ok ,Ive never done any bodywork or sheetmetal before ,so after looking at sites like this one and a few others I decided to go ahead with the project
Heres how the floor looked about half way through

Ok ,now on to the rear 1/4
Pieces brazed over the rust,niiiiiiiiiiice!
Then bog is applied,lots of bog!Ignore the date Its wrong!

So I cut all the crap out, bent the sheet using a stump,mallets ,elbow grease etc.I then welded it all in using flux cored wire in the mig!!!!
Didnt do my homework did I , I will get some gas for my next repair ,I just wanted to see if it could be done with flux core.It can but its a fine line between blowing holes and not. Eventually I will get an oxy and try to learn the old school way I now realize I should have bought an oxy set before the mig.
Anyway this is what it now looks like

I may try a shrinking disk on this panel as It appears to have had a previous repair ,disregarding the rust ones.
I did some shrinking with a propane torch on the area in front of the bead/swage and it improved the area a lot.
Good car to learn on, 48 years of repairs to fix!

I wonder if a stainless saucepan lid would do as a shrinking disk?
Anyway enough from me,I know photos are appreciated here and I will post some more when I attack the other side.

good luck with the s series , what you've done so far looks good some of the panels for these can be a real pain to get just the right shape ( I spend most of my day making panels for alot of valiants), keep the pic's coming.

Im having fun ,learning as I go.
Notice no close ups!
Ive really gotta get a bottle of gas.
That flux core makes holes as the flux fizzles out of the weld.
I was taking the shape from the other side and it seemed wrong,then I realised the other guard is full of bog!! So I shaped it by eye and feel Im pretty happy with the result so far.Are you a panel-beater specializing in vals?
This one will be a weekend driver eventually so Im not going overboard on the restoration.Get the thing on the road and then worry about chrome,door trims, dash paint,bits and pieces.

I'm a sheet metal worker, body maker, I work for a valiant restoration company so I make all the panels that they sell and do the panel work on their resto cars.
