Default 1951 F1 Pick Up Modified Re-Build

Hi All, I thought it would be time for me to start posting a few photos of a current project I'm undertaking...........
The owner purchased the truck from a panel shop who was doing all the work for another customer, who eventually bit the bullet and off-loaded it. The cab was all finished, nice and straight covered in primer and lots of little things needed doing. One would of thought that this would be a good buy! "Right!" The current owner who just bought it thought along those lines. Until I saw it, I said we need to strip it back and see what we have got, How wrong he was.......................That's when my nightmare started.

This was the front guard after it was stripped of all Nicky(Bondo) Fantastic welding repairs were covered over, Total shame! as well as the great wheel clearance.

Fabricated a little flare and tweaked the guards slightly for clearance, as well as cleaned the rust areas

Don't feel bad john. Bought a 56 Chevy p/u here in the states for myself and k knew going in I was going to strip the body to see the body shop work that had been done----nothing but lapped joints tack welded, plates welded on top of holes then bondo over-----looked like more work than actually doing it the right way. So needless to say I'm glad I did the rework. Hope the customer understands and appreciates your work.

The horror stories just keep on ..... don't they? Oh, the stuff we find when opening up some recent work that has a few dangling threads that just NEED pulling ....

Our old saying from the HAC metal resto shop days was:

"a lot of bondo and some paint
makes 'em look like what they ain't."

The fresh tin sure looks good, and I hope the owner appreciates your beautiful craftsmanship, Oldnek. You do have your chops - like the clean finished ends of the beads.

I used to keep the cut-outs for my "rogue's Gallery." ... but then it got to be too much so I kept the worst, and that got to be too much .... sigh.

We think they didn't brace the cab before welding the 2mm floor in, cause the doors would close, and passenger side would jam, The gaps where all over the shop. no wonder they gave up. The Cab had 1.5 inches of twist in it.

After cutting the floor out, I had to pry and pack the doors to get the 4mm gaps and then welded the doors to the cab, then built internal bracing frame.
The Fuel Filler patch panel shows just how good theses blokes were.

Here they used 3mm RHS for the cab mount points and ran them along the sills (rocker) panels. These guys had no idea.

3mm sheet for the inner kick panels, nice and strong on the floor , not the way they did it. The Patch work sill (rocker) panel....There's more sheets in that rocker than a plate of Lasagna

Made the inner kicks and purchased the Lower Front Cab Corners and Rocker Panels from Dennis Carpenters (Which are EMS Manufactured)
Only because I didn't know what the originals looked like and how they fit.

The floor is looking a dam site better than what was previously fitted in there.
At least 6 times lighter as well. Cabin mount points where incorporated as part of the firewall. I did it this way cause I think it looks neater, and gives it a 2014 Factory look.
