Hello my name is Joe and I live in Northamptonshire England, I work as a mig welder but have been dabbling in gas welding whenever I get the chance, I'm ok at fusing 1mm mild steel together as a tack weld and do some small runs but as soon as I blow a hole I have a problem adding filler rod and end up just making the hole bigger, any advice would be appreiciated.
Also could someone tell me what size tip to use on 1mm steel sheet? ( are American and English tips sized the same? ) I also purchased a copy of David's DVD and was glad I did as without his help I would have tried to 'BUY' my way into learning to metal shape by purchasing the obligatory tools like ewheel, planishing hammer ect. Now with a few hand tools some bought and some made I am making real progress and have just finished my second bowl. My next project is to try to recreate David's motorbike tank in steel and I will post my progress as I go along. Any other ideas as learning projects would also be appreiciated. Thanks Joe D |

Welcome Joe. I'll let the gas welder folks give you the tip advice. Good to see all the UK folks coming out of the woodwork.

Hi Joe
Welcome to the site, loads of good stuff here with highly skilled guy just waiting for a question to answer. Try it. I'm down in North Devon, a metal shaper in waiting, looking forward to seeing a project from you.

The size you need is going to be dependant on the type of torch you have. There are size differences between manufacturers.
Take a look at this chart: http://bikesmithdesign.com/Welding/Tips.pdf and see if your torch is listed. As an example, I have a Harris torch and I use a #1 tip for 18g (~1.2mm) and #3 tip for 16g (~1.6mm). This is for sheetmetal, with aluminum the tip sizes can be larger. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, my welding setup is a Butbro and I have managed to find a nozzle chart online, It turns out my problem is that I'm trying to weld 1mm sheet with a size 5 nozzle which is suitable for 2-2.5mm.
As soon as i get a size 1 I'll let yiu know how i get on! Thanks Joe |
