Default Canadian Connection

Hi all...I started with metal as a sheetmetal worker (HVAC industry)...back in the day held all the top marks in school as an apprentice BUT everything we made were combinations of straight lines (triangulation). Now I focus on T I G welding ( eeek 660 amps one day!) and commercial fabrication.

I have an artistic side AND want to shape compound curves to supplement my skills. Major goal is to develop a business providing that elusive product that everyone must have (ha ha). Kidding aside, I am very impressed with the level of skills displayed on this forum, have lots to learn obviously, and have been needing a challenge. Problem is; I don't know what to make.

I reside on lower Vancouver Island. I guess I am wondering if anyone near by has an english wheel for me to try out.

Later,

Jay

Welcome Jay,

I think we have a few members up in your neck of the woods. Hopefully one of them will chime in.

Welcome Jay, don't worry about making something in particular. Pick a shape that you and give it a try. This will help you improve you skills and you will learn what it takes to make the metal move like you want it to. Thanks for joining us.

thanks guys...I can really make stainless dance (my favourite), but I understand its the most difficult to stretch and shrink...think I will start with some 5000 series aluminum instead.

Jay, The problem with stainless is that it work hardens quickly when you shrink or stretch. Different alloys act differently but 304 is the worse. There is a saying 303 she's for me, 304 she's a whore.

5000 series aluminum can be worked but it is a little harder to work and will also work harden. 3003 is a very good alloy of aluminum for metal shaping. When you work aluminum it will move fast so go slower than you would with steel.
