Hi all, intro post for another (hopefully) new member.
Not sure what exactly is needed here so I'll cover the basics in point form: Male 30 Canadian IT by trade, tinkerer of any and all devices by hobby. I found the site while searching around for info and advice on getting started with metal working, specifically hand forming small to medium sized one offs for personal use. Basically most times I found what seemed to be an intelligent and reasonable person offering advice on another board/site they almost invariably linked to threads here that can't be viewed without membership. In all honesty I probably won't have much to contribute starting off, I don't have much experience with metal shaping. I am well versed in physics, chemistry and most basic engineering concepts including 3d modeling which usually helps me pickup new skills quickly. My main goal is to develop the skill to get the objects I can picture in my mind out of my head and into my hands. I'm mostly just looking for advice on getting started while on a budget(like many people I'm sure). I would love to outfit the garage with an english wheel, large break, bead roller, etc... but for now I'll be sticking to hand tools and maybe a knock-off Beverley Shear once my tax return comes in(assuming there are any useable knock-offs). Thankfully, while I don't have much money I do have time and a heated garage to hide away in for a few months to practice. As for what I'll be doing with the metal, mostly body work and such for cars and motorcycles. Between myself and friends there are a few dozen machines in various states or build/repair. I've got a couple project bikes including one that doesn't really matter if it ever sees the road again to experiment with. I also help run a rally car for Targa Newfoundland so being able to massage out the dents and dings the drivers tend to put in it each year will be helpful.
