Welcome aboard Matt! Good to see someone else from "the old neighborhood" showing up. I spent 30 some years in central Illinois (Leroy, Paxton, Rantoul, Champaign-Urbana) before moving to Alabama a little over a year ago.
Practice, studying and perseverance are everything with this hobby! There are a lot of ways to get the results you want, but practicing something that doesn't work makes you feel like you're chasing your tail! While there are plenty of right ways to shape metal, not all of these ways "click" in everyone's head and you might find one method works better for you than others. A couple of the guys with plenty of information to share have already chimed in here - Peter and David are professional, world-class metalshapers. That being said, there are a LOT of folks here with some excellent information and ideas.
