Unwashed sand like the traction sand sold in tubes in Northern climes has a lot of dust, I would avoid that as well. I use a lot of it on my walks and drive each winter and can verify its dust content.

I have used washed play sand, but after reading on another forum have switched to Black Diamond blasting media, as it has negligible silica content, is cheap, and I have it here for my blast cabinet anyways. Comparing the two, the Black Diamond seems firmer. Maybe because it's a larger, sharper granule, so it doesn't move as easily as the play sand?
Blasting media, are you talking about sandblasting sand?GM
