You said that if you could see the weld you did not think it was a metal finish what about this model A wing The thing about this work is that it is time consuming and I think the quickest way to achive a metal finish is the method I use but it does leave a slight undercut. The repair to the model A wing below took less than a morning from start to finish. Time is money. Primer will cover the undercuts. If I am working on something that is going to be chrome plated I use a different technique but it takes longer. (so costs more).
