Brad, dont think you need to invest a fortune in machines to get started especially for the sort of things you intend to make. You can make almost anything with little more than hand tools. Most parts you would be making for your bikes would be fairly small and easily do-able with hand tools. Check out my thread on making bumpers, I will be making the Aston Martin bumper using only hand tools and it will be finished to a good enough standard to be chrome plated.
You can also check my youtube footage where you can see some of the tools and techniques I use.
