Hi Joe, Welcome to the site. You should use a no.1 tip for 1mm steel, I do say this on the DVD. The tip sizes are standardized in the UK so no matter what torch you have it will be the same. I am not surprised you are blowing holes with a no.5 you could weld 3mm with that!. American tip sizes are not the same.

The reason you are having trouble with blowing holes when trying to add a little filler rod is probably the tip size too. Try a smaller tip and ask again if you are still having problems.

Keep up the practice gas welding is the best in my opinion. I have been teaching a course at Colchester Institute for a few weeks now and the last two evenings we have been doing gas welding, the class picked it up really well, some have produced perfect welds I will post some photos as soon as I get time.
