With a Ni chloride + Ni sulfate + Boric acid bath, what can a DIY plater use as a brightener? I've heard that saccharine will work, and possibly maple syrup. Commercial users buy brightener from suppliers ready to mix in, and the ingredients are proprietary, sold in 5 gal buckets. Since my tank is 2 gallons, I need about a table spoon or so. Thus my question about saccharine.
Also, have they come up with a trivalent chrome that is the equal in appearance and mechanical properties to hexavalent?
This is a little outside the scope of metal shaping, but when trying to restore dented motorcycle tanks and other small parts, it becomes an issue to consider.

You are talking about show chrome. Sadly I am a hard chrome plater, I have done zinc, copper, tin and cadmium. But no nickel I'm afraid. I know that they use nickel plating to brighten the chrome but that's it for me. I can look into it for ya. Have you tried Caswell plating for supplies, I know that they deal in smaller quantity for the diy'ers...GM
