Take a look at these threads. I used the method in the first one, but cut mine into the end grain. End grain is harder to work and I don't know if it really makes a difference. I'm really new at this...

PCB Etchant Solution

I've used this method on brass, using printed circuit board etchant from Radio Shack. Just make sure the vinyl lettering is pressed down tight with no wrinkles. Use pin striping tape for border...
