Hello. I just found this site and want to join up. Looks really cool. i am interested in learning to shape metal, specifically concerning old Ford tin.;)
I have a 1931 ford model A coupe. As you can imagine in needs a lot of work to bring it back to it's former glory or it's new former glory......a early Hot Rod!
anyways. I have tons of newbie questions, but I'm going to do some searching and reading first. I'll start posting once I've exhausted the archives. Later

Welcome to allmetalshaping Matt. My first love is early style hot rods especially the model A. I have restored (and rodded) a few. Never managed to do one for myself though. I prefer the A over the deuce. I chopped a 31 model A about 25 years ago, there were not too many here in England then. We built it with a 24 stud flathead, Offy heads, half race cam, etc, forty brakes with Buick finned drums, 16 inch wires, it was channeled and chopped and fenderless pretty rad for England then.

Making and fitting repair sections for a model A is not too hard so it is a good beginners project.

Here is what I am working on. I've only had it about a month.

It's a Late 1931 model A coupe with a 3 inch chop, no channel, original A frame, 36 front axle, 40 rear, 40 juice brakes, 1941 Flathead, 16 inch wires, BLC headlights, etc. I'm going for a 1940-1950 build period

I got the body from a guy that had it listed funny on craigslist. Basically It was make an offer, I was the only one to come take a look. I loaded it up for really cheap. Then I found a original 31 frame with a clear vin. Then the axles, then the wheels. basically I am piecing it together out of old parts as I don't want to use much new parts.. The previous owner chopped it about 20 years ago. He didn't brace the body:(, The top isn't even tacked on yet. so basically I have a lot of mistakes to repair.

here is what I want it to look like when done. except maybe with the A grill and shiny black paint. think words like evil and sinister.

Judging by that selection of parts you have, it looks like you're off to a good start. These guys here will be able to tell you everything you need to know about putting it together while also capturing the look you are after.

I really like the stance of the car in your last picture, I think they look really good sitting like that. If that's your plan, I'll be watching this one closely that's for sure! Be sure to send pics as you make progress!
