Silver solder flux
 

I silver soldered the platform of the Pulmax jig to the bolt just to make a distortion free connection. Looking at the dregs of my flux jar prompted this query.
Is this one of the products that were discontinued due to content? I have used from this same tub for more than 20 years and it still works great, but I can no longer find it.

Are there any recommendations for a replacement?

For nearly 20 yrs, I've used Harris Stay Sil white flux for all my tooling build/rebuild work. Works fine with no issues for carbide-tipped impact tooling like stone chisels and bushing tools, whether I'm using rod (butt brazing & shoulder built joints) or actual ribbon silver (wide square butt joints for attaching cubes). I go through a lot of chisels. It's also performed without issue for "plain" brazing and silver solder work.

I plan to use it for my Gairu/pullmax tooling.

I use Harris stay sil white flux for most of my brazing or silver solder work.


I also have a can of their black flux for higher temp brazing but have not used any in years.

I think the problem might be the disappearance of Engelhard rather than changes in chemical content. There's been a lot of consolidation in industry.

(keep fresh water handy as this flux does dry out in our arid desert airs - along with some 3/8" wood dowel to pound and mix it back to useful creaminess. Lid seal not so great with the lid-brush about the same.)

The dowel tip ^^^ is important because it's easy to break the brush trying to stir a lumpy bottle back to creamy goodness, long before the flux is used up. The dowel can also be used to break up flux that dries out into lumpy chunks in the brush bristles.

Oh, that is a good point. It can dry out completely and be rehydrated without any harm.

I transferred the dried out lump to an old jam jar, it seals better than the plastic jar it came in and I don't have to add water every time.
