Default 33 Plymouth PD Rumble Seat

Just struck a deal for a Rumble Seat Coupe. South African car imported in 2002 and only now has come to light because the owner got short of cash. There is rust in the rear of the truck floor across the back valance and out to the back lower fender corners.

Wont get it home for a week and forgot my camera, these Photos the owner sent me before viewing.

The tub (rust is at the extreme L/H end)

The Fenders but no sidemount covers.

Rolling chassis with running engine

A little winter project.

I think it will be a quick restoration depending what the paint comes up like when its home, not sure if I will sell it on, must be a bit of a rare breed RHD. Grandson think's I'm kidding him saying there's a seat in the boot.

These photos were taken in South Africa after it was loosely put back together ready for the container.

Next photos in a couple of weeks when its home and we can discuss the repair to the back end.

Default Phase 1

All now in my new workshop, very basic but its a step forward.

Trunk floor (lighter colour is fibreglass)

Rough panel size 46 x 16 you can just make out the finish point of the floor where it meets the return of the rear outside panel.

Rusted out rear lower quarters lots of detail happening.

Stock infill @ $325/side states side.

The floor was already removed by its last owner, so a little guessing will take place and only have hand tools to work with. I am thinking that the centre of the original floor could be saved as there is an upstand pyramid shape which caps the spare wheel fixing on the chassis. Also in pic3 (lower left) the rear panel has been cut off thru the 120 deg. bend so a return strip with the bend will need to be added.

Please give me your thoughts on how to approach this repair.

Tom,

In order to advise you about this you will need to put lots if detailed photos up. Concentrate on one area at a time.

Looks like a great project! Take your time, take lots of pictures! If you run into trouble take pictures and ask for help! the one thing the metal shaping forums are known for is great advise!

Ok David, I’m not sure where a good place to start would be and if you would normally try to keep panel join lines to their original positions? Also would you normally work from the outside in or get the structure right and add the cosmetic panels to it?

Would it be feasible to start with a small patch panel as shown, the black area is the inner wheel arch which runs from 1 1/2" return at the top into the 3/16" rad at the bottom of the tail piece.

Your thoughts please I can stand a kicking
