Well, my first post---other than intro. I have been struggling with this question for a while and I have tossed over in my mind all the pros and cons mentioned here. I like the idea of using epoxy. Can I just use a rattle can epoxy or do I need to get the fancy stuff?

Just as an aside, I am REALLY impressed by the tremendous skill and knowledge of this group.

i would say if you can get hold of a two pac epoxy primer, that is fine. i have used this type of primer supplied through the bmw parts system and it is ok.

i will say i have not tried this on bare metal as new panels are covered with a cataphoretic primer anyway, if you can get a hold of a can relativly cheaply you could cover a piece of bare steel and leave it in the rain for some time and see what happens

2k epoxy mastic paints/primers are better than 1k. I mainly use Jotamastic 80 over here, it's not expensive. Not sure if they are sold in the US. I was also given a heap of Carboline Carbomastic 15T, 18FC and carbozinc 858, all really good stuff. I want to give the 15T and 18FC a go on some exterior panels and see what it's like.

A very popular automotive corrosion specialist company in the UK rebadge the Jotun paints as their own over here. The two they use are: Penguard primer for exterior panels and Jotamastic smartpack for all other areas which need better corrosion protection. Both of these have been tested over here against other protective paints sold by automotive companies and come out best in class, ironically though there are better Jotun paints to use.

The one thing with epoxy mastic paints though is they go really hard after a week or so and are a then a PITA to sand.

Mitch,

It appears the products you mention are not available on this side of the pond.

I'm not familiar with the term "epoxy mastic paints". Is that just epoxy paint or is that something different?

Hi Don, this is a nice bit of reading to explain better than I could: http://www.jotun.ro/www/com/20020115.nsf/viewunid/C2C424C818BA617FC1257021002EE4E8/$file/Pure+Epoxies+vs+Epoxy+Mastics+for+Maintenance.pdf

My Jotun catalogue has a contact for the US so will post that tomorrow.

I work for a big US oil and gas company over in the UK in Asset Integrity but I'm not a coatings expert but a colleague is so I'm always picking his brain as I have a genuine interest in coatings and preventing corrosion in my job.

I live in a country with tropical weather, rust is always a problem for metal plates, unlike other dry climates. My question, in layman beginner is: how different solders act on the sheet in question to cause more or less rust?
Good surface preparation and application of primers inhibit the process or we can wait for some time a possible outbreak of rust under the paint? If there is a topic about it, please let me know. Thanks, guys.

Mitch,

Now I get it. Great link. I think I will be looking for an epoxy mastic supplier for my restoration projects.

Thanks,
Don

The phone number for Jotun in the US is +1 800 229 3538 or +1 504 394 3538.

I've sprayed Jotamastic 80 on the underside of my old Volvo Amazon Stationwagon and looked really good. I thinned it 15% before spraying. I've not used on the top of panels yet but I will do. Pure epoxy primers will be good too. Then there is also zinc rich epoxies which are excellent anti-corrosion primers and are ideal where you have very good surface prep to the steel (media blasted).

Mitch,

Thanks for the contact info. I'll give them a call.

Nice looking project you have there. From the picture, the paint you have on the underside looks like it could be top coat.
