Joe any wood will work, but hard wood will last a bit longer. cut the dish on the end grain. may need a band around it to controlsplitting apart if it isn't very thick. Many have made bench top models 8-10 inches thick.

My first was boxelder not sure what the new one is, both worked fine. Just make one with what you can find now, and keep looking for a better log later, so you can keep working on the project.

The dash is very creative !!!! I like it a lot

Steve , would you believe I just pick up a nice Ash wood stump from across the street. Boy was it heavy. Any suggestions how deep to dish out the stump?

Hi
If the stump is big you may have place for more than one "dish"
Othewice you can make diffrent once in each end of it and turn it upside down if you need the other one..

The dash is absolutely wounderful, the details do it!!

Oh dear! After a couple of decades trying to forget I ever worked on a million VWs in my early days, I've actually found one that I like! Great job!

I've also got a 2.8 for my next project.

I have to agree with Longyard, after building so many in my younger days I thought I would never see another one that made my guts rumble but you cleared that all up. That thing is a hoot, I bet you can't wait to drive it. I know I couldn't.
