I don't even want to get started about galvinized metal.

Pugsy,, I'm pretty sure your tig'n your stainless so you won't have the smoke as you would with arc welding.
My concern right now is about grinding stainless, thats where they want us to where a full white space suit.

Default welding stainless Hexavalant Chrome

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/...ountry_code=US

above is a link to a wiki on hexavalant chrome. When stainless is made hexavalant chrome is used,so all stainless alloys comtain Hexavalant chrome . Hexavalant chrome is why that the EPA has cracked down on chrome platers and made chrome plating go outa sight.a few Years ago there was popular movie with Julia Roberts I believe that was about a manufactureing plant that contaminated the ground water with the stuff and tried to cover it up by buying all the land. True Story! We have to do safety Training to all our employees that will be exposed to Hexavalant Chrome. Safety Professionals believe that Hexavalant chrome exposure will be the next "Asbestos" bad stuff if you dont protect your self and you can take it home to your family... Think about it...I have coworkers with Asbestosis that wish they had Known the Hazards and protected them selves...Ok Ill get off my Box now...Sory for the rant but please educate your self to the hazards...GOOGLE It

so if stainless isnt very good for you id take it that alloy inst either ?

i was just wondering as i work in a shop where some one is always tigging alloy or cutting it with grinders and sliding mighter saws it the most common material
in the shop

because the people i work for dont seem to be to concerned about saftey or just dont know about it
in the shop im the only one who welds with gloves or a leather jacket one of the bosses sons set him self on fire the other week while mig welding in paper overalls

at least its got my foot in the door from an industry stand point im looking for an apprenticeship this year some where the standards are higher

Default SS fumes

IF all this is true, I'M SCREWED!!!

Years ago used ASBESTOES as a heat sink gas welding, and don't mention the brake dust that was blown out of the drums...

Last 25 years doing a lot of stainless steel fabrication (304), welding, grinding.

Shouldn't I be dea

(I guess I am a figment of my imagination!!!)

the exposure limit for lead if it were put in length and not years would be miles, but for hexavalent chrome, that is what is bad for you in stainless steel ,, would be inches, it is really some bad shit if you breath it in,there is nothing about stainless steel that i like,, guys be careful in what you do.

The refinery I worked over 18 yrs at now have all the welders wearing supplied air helmets in confined spaces. Go figure in my early years there, we spent hour after hour in confined spaces with welders welding 304ss overlays. No respirators. I'm fugged!

We Have a very large food service stainless tank manufacurer in my area and I have lived with these people my whole life 70 years. They do not use much safety equipment except grinders do use dust masks. I have never seen any problems with the people working there with there health due to the stainless.
Lead or galvanized you do have to use all safety precautions or it will get you in the end. Asbestosis disease is a very different animal as most people who are around it will never get it or it takes 40 years to get it and other people only have to be around it a couple of weeks and get a fatal dose and only live a short time after getting the disease.
