Default occ schwinn chopper 49ers themed bike

after I got my metal shaping tools I needed a project and the schwinn was originally just gonna be a bike I put a motor on w/ a paint job. Now I'm gonna customize some things on it, paint it red and gold, and make a 49ers bike.

the frame will be painted red after I weld these in there and grind smooth. They'll also be something similar in the rear.

This was my first project...yippee!

next it was the tank. Just winging it here. one day I'll hopefully know what I'm doing. I'm getting pretty lucky on this and shocked none of the pieces have had to be scrapped.

this little E Wheel is great for these little areas.

starting to look somewhat decent. My head got real big when I saw this...stupid rook!

I was pretty happy at that point.

after falling in love with the side of the tank and massaging it to death I decided to start the other side.

getting there...

almost there...

making the basic buck

making the pattern for the middle with the dirty finger, but all my fingers are dirty...like all the time!

again, just winging it

as you can see I already fudged it on the cut line. Instead of cutting a little on one side and then scribe and cut the other, I wanted to see how it would effect the radius
by just cutting to the cut line, or really close. Very stupid of me. Not sure what I was thinking but it definitely affected the area in terms of shrinkage after welding.

moving in every so gently

starting to look better.

mig tacked in there and then further planishing to get it good as possible.

mig welding equals lots of grinding.

after filing smooth. I was so proud I brought this thing to work AND a RM painting class. What a tool.

remember that cutline fudge?

hopefully next time I can file it the real way. I kind of think this is cheating holding the file this way but that's just me and I'd only say that about my self.

this front piece is the hardest part and there is no buck for this. This has been tacked in with mig but will be tig welded with my new eastwood tig welder.

I probably should have practiced more before attempting this but I'm going to make another tank and consider this just a practice one.

my welds need a lot of work

starting to look a little better.

even for a rook tig welder I'm impressed with how little grinding there will be in comparison to mig and especially after hearing the metal is even softer than mig for plannishing. I can't wait for that part! I love tig welding! It's so awesome being attentive to the puddle and what it's doing.

Great results! I know many "experienced" people that couldn't make that in one try.

well there was a lot of filing here, filing there, and I do have some auto body experience. Thanks! Hopefully I can one day get it cleaner without the help of filler. I think I need to make a lot more T dollys to help with that. I'm just starting so there's tons of stuff I still need.

thats a good start Henry,if you get your joint lines as close as possible you will be able to fuse most of the welds,if you need to use filler i use mig wire,as little as possible this will cut the amount of distortion and finishing.

Nice job Henry. When you start the second tank keep the first one handy.
Each time you start a new operation on your new tank take a moment and look at the first one and think about the best approach for the next step.

No way this was inspired by OCC.... I didn't see you order a single thing out of a catalog in these pics. Nice work.

a 49ers themed bike just isn't gimmicky enough. It needs wings or a lego tank or something to get their respect. when Jr gets the grinder out the camera better be rolling.

I think I'm gonna go with a whole new design, but yeah, there's tons of things I should have planned better mainly to do with cutting off access to easy planishing.

I can't even fathom doing that. That would be way down the road for me.
