As far as the rear tires....it’s not going to be a quick easy task! The rear tires do have some real width to them along with a low wheel opening. Since it’s a 4-link rear suspension: The rear of the car will have to be raised, unbolt the airbags, unbolt the shocks (and probably the panhard bar) and lower the rear end far enough to get the tires out. The same process will be done on the ‘49 Merc I have in the works as well....though those aren’t wide tires, but the wheel opening will be even lower.

This morning I got started on cutting out the remaining portion of the wheel opening, making an oversized filler panel and most importantly shaping the new wheel opening flare / lip. In all honesty, this went much better than I had anticipated (I love when that happens!)
After cutting out the original opening I wheeled up a panel to the right crown and contour of the quarter panel. I actually fit it to the door skin as it has the same shape. Once I had the panel fitting the door really nice I temporarily drilled and clecoed it in place on the quarter panel. With the panel drilled and fit from the outside, I undid it and held it in place on the inside. Mostly just for looks for now....but helps me mark the trim line eventually. The black marker outline is roughly where the radius of the flare / lip goes. After making some paper patterns to fit the back and front half of the new wheel opening I transferred it to sheet metal. (sorry forgot a pic of the paper pattern) I forgot a picture of the flat cut sheet, so here I've already started shaping the radius into this panel. I used the English wheel with an inner tube on the top wheel. Things were going so good that before I knew it I had a front and rear half shaped up. Once the "cove radius" was good and fit the quarter panel and flowed along the wheel opening I tipped the edge over to create the outer wheel lip. Obviously besides the profile shape of the wheel opening I also had to deal with the curve of the body front to back and well as up and down. Lot's of curves to fit in these panels. They are pretty darn good (I do need to re-wheel the curve on the front of the opening to match up to the lip a bit better....but that's nothing too serious at all. My paper patterns were really close, but I did still have to shrink and stretch the edges to dial the panels in (mostly for the contours of the body and not the side profile of the wheel opening shape) A view from the front showing the shaping involved. These wheel lip parts are just sitting there (no clamps) and are overlapping / underlapping each other and the edges of the quarter panel. While I fine tune the shapes and contours I'll start trimming these pieces to butt together nicely. Another view from the rear And an overall view of the complete side. I personally really like it (and the customer loves it....so that's really important and good news!)

Giday Dane,
The Rambler wasn't much of a Looker in the beginning but now I wish I was the customer, nice work mate.
