Sure seems real.
Definitely an expanding mandrel. But what stumps me on that is why does that not push out / deform /undo the previous rib inner. There is clearly no clamp to hold that in as the die expands for the new rib.

I surmise two areas of greatly contrasting hardness/stiffness.
Worked area with pronounced added geometry acts as reinforced barrier of resistance vs the unworked annealed "flat," offering the measured contrast and providing the needed "window of opportunity" for each successive ring to be added to the stack.
