I was thinking about taking the hood off the car to weld but was afraid of losing the shape and correct width, especially at the rear where there's not support. This hood didn't have any structural support. No inner frame except in front where the hood latch mounted. In the back, the hood rested on a seal that was on the cowl just before the windshield. That's all there was to keep the shape of the hood!
I knew I'd eventually have to take it off to weld the center strip in but figured I'd try to do the sides while it's still tacked to the fenders. At least if I could get that far it would be a little stronger when I lift it off. I can planish cold later. I went ahead and welded the sides and that worked very well. Being surrounded by curved surfaces helped keep distortion to a minimum. I figured since the welding gods were watching over me today, I'd see what I could do with the center strip. Well, I got 3 or 4 inches in and the hood started pulling downward. This is to be expected but the solution is to hammer weld as you go. I will have to weld in some temporary bracing and take the hood down so I can finish the welding.

Looks great Jack, you have got those lines to flow in nicely.

I got the center strip welded up and cleaned up the welds. There was some distortion so I started getting that planished by hand. Progress is slow. There is very little crown in the rear half of this panel so that's where it's most difficult. I'm alternating between hammer on and hammer off with steel dollies to stretch the metal back out and hammer with wooden block dolly for shaping.
There was no framework on this hood so for now I needed to add a brace across the rear. This was cut from the original hood hinge assembly and welded to the edges. I'll need more framework under here but for now, this will keep the metal in shape so I can continue to work with it. I've got most of the distortion straightened out but it still has a ways to go. It's difficult to reach some of the middle area with a hammer and dolly so it's slow going. It will probably take another day's work to finish by hand. I took a break from the hood and started making the right front side molding. This is the large end of the strip that is on the door and rear half of the fender. The molding is tapered so I left out the section where the wheel opening is so that the width of the molding in front is the correct size. I'm not sure I want to use this front trim piece. We designed the car to have it but I was liking the clean look with just the park lamp below the headlight. I'll have to set the grill back in and take another look but I think I'll end up keeping it as close to the rendering as possible. Ray and I spent countless hours trying to get the look right. That would be wasted time if I start changing things now.

Following your bonnet posts closely as will have 4 full lengths welds to do on mine as well! Glad it is getting there.

Marcus, I was concerned about welding down the center of this hood but I had no choice. It's a lot of hand planishing work.
Your hood is a pretty basic design, isn't it? Would it be easier to make a new hood skin?

Making a new skin is what others have told me needs to be done on mine. But I will give it a red hot go first to see what can be achieved.

Making progress. I have everything smoothed out except an area in the middle on the left side that's about 10" in diameter that's oil canning. It was about twice that size when I started working it out. I'll get it out, just not today. Tomorrow's another day.

So do I! Awesome work. I had not thought of pancaking a hood like that.
