I bought a set of Honda Civic hinges. Sometimes fabricating isn't the answer. These hinges are 7/8 square steel tube, .070" wall. They have about a 110 degree bend on a 2" radius with minimal collapse anywhere. There's no way I could duplicate that so the answer is to modify these. The pins and bushings are wimpy for what I'm doing and they are a little longer on the pivot end than they need to be. I used some heavier steel tube, and some bronze bushings and steel pins from a door hinge repair kit. I cut a couple inches off the ends of the hinges and welded the tubes on.

The hinges have to pivot on the same axis or they will bind or worse. I used a laser to get my locations the same, side to side, and also to get the back side hole location. You can set up the laser once and get the near side, then use your marker and bring it to the point where the laser hits it and mark the far side. Now both sets of holes are on the same axis.

These hinge brackets are just 18 ga steel. They need some reinforcement around the pins since there will be constant pressure on them from the gas springs. I cut up some 1/8" plates, drilled them out and welded them on the brackets.

I got the rear deck skin welded together without too much fuss. I need to use the shrinking disc on a small area but can't find my large backing disc. It might be at work. (I'm returning to work Monday the 11th... Ughhh). I can go ahead with finishing this and get it mounted.

Next I punched the 4 holes for the roof latches. I hope I measured right.

Checked the fit and it looks OK so I tacked it in.

There will be some polished stainless bezels that will finish off these holes and tubes that will fill the gap between the skin and the latches but that's waaaaaay down the road.

Very impressive work. How did you get the alignment of that hole with the pipe spot on?
