Default Making patch panels on my Jeep

First try at making some patch panels on 1955 M38A1.
First made poster board templates. Then cut out plywood and shaped it.
sandwiched the steel sheet between the plywoodand clamped them. Then I hammered the edges.

I also tried to make a hat channel on my sheet metal brake.

Got to pratice to get better.

Thanks,

Dave

What do you think?
Should I mig these in or weld tem oxy accetylene? Got a torch done that before. Just quit renting the tanks. Will buy some, tanks one day.
In the past I've used the mig, ground them, and used a thin coat of Bondo.

If I gas weld them in, I may be able to grind them and hammer them flat with no filler.

I have used a TIG but they are expensive.

Will need advice when get around to repairing the rear panel, more complex shapes.

I'll take some pics.
Always looking for some input from people who do this more than I do.

Thanks,

Dave

Are you planning to cut and trim the body and panels to make fitted butt joints or lay the patch over the body and weld a lap joint. You haven't given much info to work with. Are you using the same gauge metal as the body?

Good point.
I wil cut and trim to fit. I don't like lap joints. Yes, it's the same thickness sheet steel. I think it's 18 guage.

Thought I'd clamp these panels on, scribe a line and cut out the rust.
Trim the panels to fit and weld them in.
Got lot's of vise Grips and several welding but weld clamps.

Once I get this done, I move on to the rear panel, it's more complicated.

Thanks,

Dave
