You whack the metal with a hammer . You need to check out Peter Tommasini (I know I have mangled the spelling) on youtube making an entire quarter panel with a few hammers and slappers. You will see him stretching with a very rounded hammer into a sand bag. There are fancier ways to stretch - power hammers, English wheel, etc etc, but the basic way is to use a high crown hammer into a dished tree stump or a leather bag filled with lead shot or sand. And there are different shaped hammers to use depending on whether or not you want to stretch in one direction only or it all directions.

I think the Tin Man still has videos of his air hammer and he demonstrates stretching with it. But that is basically a hammer powered by an air cylinder, so it goes faster. But the principle is the same. Just less arm pain and you can ruin a panel WAY faster if you don't know how to do it.
