The different supply companies vary greatly. The other company that is somewhat local to me won't deal with owner tanks larger than 20 CF.

Default Rent, own or lease bottles???

When you rent bottles you pay a little each month but a lot over time. Bottle inspections and maintenance are included and fills are on exchange basis.

When you buy bottles you are responsible for maintenance and periodic testing inspections. Fills are "wait in line and come back to pick up."

When you lease bottles, the maintenance and inspections are included and fills are on exchange basis. Rates vary for cost and time of lease.

When I buy old bottles and convert them to leasage under my Airgas account, it is a nominal charge to "bring them into the system in my account" and then fills are on exchange basis. Old guys won't see the savings on leases that young guys will, so that is why I started doing the 99yr. leases on my bottles decades ago. Even 10 years is a good deal, on the lease program, at the nominal fee to "bring them in" - after buying them used on the open market.

When you look at the open market with bottles being moved, sold, traded, or left behind, the welding suppliers aren't losing much when a bottle or set goes AWOL - because for the nominal fee they get them back into the fillage regimen and start making money on gas sales, again.

When you figure the rental $ at a few per month, times 2x bottles, x12 months, the tires on that deal go flat after two years, for me.
