Just getting into metal work.
Hello, my name is Todd. I live in Dallas, TX. A little over a year ago I purchased a front bumper kit from Move. This is a 3/8" steel bumper in pieces, welded together by the purchaser to create a full size bumper. Cost is about $500.00 (delivered - all 120Lbs) compared to $1500.00 for an off the shelf after market bumper. I set out to build this bumper. I watched a ton of YouTube video's and learned how to weld again (did it in high school but that was many moons ago). I picked up a cheap HF welder, did a mod to it to convert it to DC operation (yes a POS but it works great once it's DC instead of AC), and I went to work. The bumper came out pretty good. I've worked with wood in the past and enjoyed that work, and now find working with metal just as enjoyable. What brought me here though was a post where a member was looking at making an oil tank for his bike but 8 sided like a polygon. The suggestions all pointed him to documentation on polygons and cones. I came up with an easy way to come up with the 8 pieces needed and though the post is from 2012, the method is easy and may be of interest to others. Plus, of course when I need help with some crazy thing I'm trying to do with metal, we'll, what better place to come to than to those that have experience!
