I recommend using steel hammers for steel and keep the wooden mallets for ally. In my opinion the plastic mallets just make hard work. (I have not tried the composite mallets) In my youtube footage I show my approach to 'stump shrinking' I have a slightly different way of doing this process. It is the traditional way here in Europe, in England we call it hollowing. The bumper you see in the footage is made from 2mm thick steel (14 gauge) and is entirely hand formed (no machines).
