Can I add my congratulations on MSOTM Mike. That's quite a project you have.

I took a break from metalwork to test my artistic capabilities. I saw a you tube video of guy doing faux burlwood on wood. I wondered if I could make it work on aluminum dash panels.

Back to metal work! Since my dash is all new shape, I had to make new defroster ducts. Fairly simple pieces, but I had to put welds where distortion could be controlled. They are made from .040 &.050 aluminum. The openings are 5"x5/8", so the individual pieces are pretty small. I challenged my torch welding skills.

Here are the small pieces tat make up each duct. 2 curved and 2 relatively straight. They are mirror images so making a hammer form wasn't practical.

The parts are looking good, Mike.

My vote for the faux burl wood on metal is to go for it. We've done a fair amount of wood graining and really enjoy it. Once you figure out how the substrate grabs or doesn't grab the paint from your graining tool (rubber, feather, etc), it's a lot of fun. the transparent quality of burl would be a good challenge.
