Default Remember saftey gear when using a grinder

I am sure there are more than a few on here that use cutoff wheels on a hand grinder. This is just a reminder to use the proper safety gear, you don't want to be this guy.

Disclaimer: picture is not total gore but may be disturbing to some.

Thanks for the reminder. Those wheels can be deadly and it's a good thing it didn't hit an artery.

The worst thing I see when people use these tools is lack of a handle, and trying to grind with the side of the wheel.

Is this a grinder wheel or a cut off disk? Looks like a cut off disk to me. I guess he took the guard of of the machine like most of us do ?

I'd say its a cutoff wheel that he tryed to use as a grinding disc... Then it is what it is and you get what you got.
I use these cutoff wheels on a dayly basis, so much that the first 2 tools outta the box and on the bench are the grinder and the cutoff. Never have I seen one go like that unless.... your using it for grinding instead of cutting, well if I drop it on the floor it looks like that too.

Every since I saw a similar picture several years ago my guard is back in place. Even though this doesn't happen often, it's not worth that "one time". It's too easy to tip or twist a heavy grinder when cutting.

Probably bound up, I have fragged more than one disc binding it. Either by cutting off a heavy piece of unsupported steel and pinching the disc, or by letting the grinder wander. Cut off wheels are great, just use caution.

I must have cracked one the other day and when I fired it up it came apart. Smacked me in the leg pretty good. Left a welt but no blood loss. My Dad used to say Stupid is as stupid does. Maybe I should find that guard!

Unfortunately my wife is a theatre nurse.
When we first met twenty (!) or so years ago she told me about a guy who came in with horrific facial injuries from an accident involving an "axle" grinder.
Of course I told her that I would never use one of those (and to this day I haven't ) Too damned dangerous !
Angle grinders, well I've got a few.
Over the years I have heard all the stories. Chainsaws, power-saws, lathes, gas bottles, nail guns axle grinders etc.
On my bench grinder I have written "BLIND FOR LIFE ? "
If I was an inch taller I'd be doing this by Braille
Please respect them tools

Cheers John

Yep that's got to hurt!. I guess he has been watching American Chopper where they use discs which are far too big for the grinder without any guard, I keep waiting to here that one of them has cut their fingers off. I am surprised that a show like that is allowed to go out on air where others will copy, surely it would be grounds for suing the TV company?. Whatever its stupid beyond belief. I never use a grindng or cutting disc without a guard, I can't believe anyone would.
